The Eight Northern Pueblos of New Mexico are Taos, Picuris, Santa Clara, San Juan, San Ildefonso, Nambé, Pojoaque, and Tesuque.
The Eight Northern Pueblos Arts and Crafts Show is in its 38th year. It’s a popular event in the summer, north of our Santa Fe home.
One year, the onstage announcer described the Europeans sailing west in search of tea, spices, and gold.
When they made landfall, the Europeans thought they’d reached India. So they named the natives, “Indians”. The announcer chuckled: he was thankful the Europeans didn’t think they’d landed in Turkey.
Wikipedia suggests, though, that the bird’s name may have come from “first, the genuine belief that the newly-discovered Americas were in fact a part of Asia, and second, the tendency during that time to attribute exotic animals and foods to a place that symbolized far-off, exotic lands”.
I guess, if there were another good name, we’d give it the bird.
